Personal Experience
My personal journey through Izu Peninsula began on a spring morning in 2017. As I ventured deeper into this captivating peninsula, I found myself falling head over heels for its natural beauty and unique charm. It was a moment I will forever cherish. My one day trip to Hakone, turned into a 5 day holiday of Izu Peninsula.
One particular memory stands out vividly in my mind. I was driving as the sun cast its rays over the lush green landscapes of Izu Kogen, I caught my first glimpse of the majestic Mount Omuro. Its perfectly symmetrical cone shape against the clear blue sky was a sight to behold. It was as if nature itself had crafted a masterpiece right before my eyes. In that moment, I felt a deep connection with the land and a profound sense of awe. As evening descended, I found myself immersed in an outdoor onsen that I had all to myself. Steam gently rose from the hot spring, creating an ethereal ambiance. As I relaxed and gazed at the starry northern sky, I couldn’t help but whisper to myself, “This is paradise.”
It is needless to say I have visited Izu many, many times since then.

Rising to a height of 580 meters, Mount Omuro is a stunning volcanic cone that offers panoramic views of Izu Peninsula and the surrounding ocean (Sagami Bay). It is renowned for its perfectly shaped, circular crater, which formed approximately 4,000 years ago. With its rich history and unique geological features, Mount Omuro has become a popular attraction for nature enthusiasts and hikers alike. The chairlift ride up the slope of this dormant volcano is an attraction in itself. Mount Omuro is my personal favourite spot in Izu.

Crater Walk: The primary attraction of Mount Omuro is the opportunity to walk along the rim of its crater. A well-maintained path takes visitors on a leisurely stroll around the circumference, approximately 1km, offering sensational views of the volcanic landscape, Izu Peninsula, and Sagami Bay, as well as Mt Fuji on clear days. The hike is relatively easy and can be completed within 30 to 40 minutes.
Observation Deck: At the summit of Mount Omuro, an observation deck provides an unparalleled vantage point to soak in the panoramic vistas. Take your time to enjoy the sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, surrounding mountains, and nearby towns. On clear days, you may even catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji in the distance.

- Before embarking on your hike, check the weather forecast and be prepared for potential changes in conditions. Very strong winds or foggy weather may impact visibility and hiking safety.

- As you explore Mount Omuro, the sun can be intense, particularly during the summer months. Apply sunscreen, wear a hat, and bring sunglasses to protect yourself from harmful UV rays.

- Although the hike around Mount Omuro’s crater is relatively easy, it involves ascending and descending some slopes. Assess your physical fitness level and take breaks as needed during the hike.

Jogasaki Coast is a rugged and picturesque stretch of coastline located in Ito City. It is known for its dramatic cliffs, scenic hiking trails, and panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean.
Embark on a hike along the Jogasaki Coast trail, which offers breath taking views of the rugged cliffs, crashing waves, and rock formations sculpted by volcanic activity. Cross the iconic Kadowaki Suspension Bridge, suspended above the ocean, providing stunning views of the coastline. Explore the lava formations of Izu Peninsula, such as the famous Kadowaki Lighthouse. Capture memorable photographs of the coastal scenery, including beautiful sunsets and unique geological features.
Note: Not all trail areas are suitable for prams (one time we took our 18 month old in a pram here), strollers or toddlers, or for those using wheelchairs. However you can still experience the sheer beauty of rocks, waves and everything else mother nature has to offer at Jogasaki coastline.
Izu Granpal Park
Izu Granpal Park is a family-friendly amusement park located in Ito City. It offers a wide range of attractions, entertainment, and outdoor spaces for visitors of all ages. Your little ones will love it here, there’s heaps of things to do to keep them busy!
Enjoy thrilling rides such as roller coasters, Ferris wheels, and carousels. Explore the beautifully landscaped flower gardens, which showcase a variety of seasonal blooms. Visit the petting zoo, where children can interact with friendly animals and learn about their care. Try your hand at mini-golf on the park’s well-designed courses. Indulge in delicious local cuisine at the park’s restaurants and food stalls.
Atami Onsen
Atami is a well-known hot spring resort town nestled on the coast of Izu Peninsula. It offers a blend of natural beauty, seaside charm, and rejuvenating hot springs. While it has certainly seen better days, Atami is still a great place to enjoy Japanese hot springs.
Indulge in the relaxing and therapeutic hot springs found throughout Atami. Immerse yourself in the healing waters of various onsens, some offering stunning ocean views. Visit the MOA Museum of Art, which showcases a magnificent collection of Japanese and East Asian art, surrounded by beautiful gardens. Don’t miss the Capybara Onsen, a heartwarming attraction where you can observe adorable capybaras relaxing in their own hot spring. Lake Ippeki is a picturesque freshwater lake located in the heart of Izu Peninsula, offering a serene natural sanctuary. Always carry some cash: It’s advisable to carry some cash for smaller establishments, local markets, and transportation fares. Credit cards are widely accepted in larger establishments, but it’s always good to have cash on hand.
Check the weather: The weather in Izu can vary greatly, so it is important to check the forecast at least a few days in advance, and to pack for all types of weather in particular if visiting in spring and autumn where the weather and temperatures can change significantly. Like in many other parts of Japan, Izu is prone to typhoons and heavy rains so keeping an eye on weather can keep you out of trouble.
