Top Attractions at Hakkeijima

Aqua Museum: A World of Marine Life
The Aqua Museum is the centrepiece of Hakkeijima Sea Paradise. This indoor and outdoor aquarium is divided into themed sections, each showcasing different marine habitats. You’ll find over 700 species here, including sharks, penguins, polar bears, and sea turtles. With more than 100,000 creatures, it’s a must-see attraction.
The dolphin show is the highlight of the Aqua Museum (although I find the Beluga whale performance that precedes it equally fascinating). These ‘Animal Life Live‘ shows last about 20 minutes and are incredibly popular, so arrive at least 30 minutes early to secure good seats. The seating arrangement makes a massive difference to your experience, especially on weekends.
Important update: The dolphin show and other animal performances that form part of ‘Animal Life Live’ have been suspended until March 6th due to renovations at the Aqua Stadium (the renovations are long overdue in my opinion).
Dolphin Fantasy
An interactive aquarium focused entirely on dolphins, where you can watch them swim in a massive glass tunnel. It’s a great spot for kids and adults alike to see these intelligent creatures.
Fureai Lagoon: Interactive Experiences
Visitors can touch and interact with dolphins, penguins, seals, and even walruses. Advance booking is required for animal feeding sessions. Even if you don’t book an activity, you can still enjoy watching the animals up close.
Umi Farm: Catch-and-Cook Adventure
Umi Farm is a unique attraction where you can catch fish and have them cooked for you at Umi Kitchen. It’s a fun and educational experience, especially for children. While there’s a small fee for fishing and per fish caught, it’s well worth it. This is one of the most popular activities for younger kids.
Pleasure Land: Thrills for All Ages
Pleasure Land is the amusement park section of Hakkeijima Sea Paradise, featuring 19 attractions spread across the island. Highlights include:
- Surf Coast Leviathan: A roller coaster with stunning views of the bay—perfect for thrill-seekers.
- Aqua Ride II: A water ride that’s ideal for cooling off on hot days.
- Sea Paradise Tower: Offers panoramic views of Yokohama Bay.
Height and age restrictions apply for each ride, and these are clearly stated in English on notice boards. Adults accompanying young children will only need to pay for one ticket if they don’t have a day pass.
Indoor Playground
Yokohama’s best indoor playground, according to my son. It features a variety of attractions and play equipment for children aged 9 and under. Tickets must be booked online in advance.

Gardens and Walking Paths: Nature’s Beauty
Take a stroll through lush greenery and seasonal flowers. The walking paths leading to the top of the hill are particularly pretty, especially during cherry blossom season if you are lucky enough to visit in late March. It’s a peaceful way to unwind after exploring the busier parts of the park.
Dining Options: From Casual to Fine Dining
Hakkeijima offers a range of dining options to suit every taste. From food court style fast food options like burgers, ramen and pizza, to restaurant style sushi, tempura and Hawaiian dining, to churros, crepes and ice cream for those with a sweet tooth.
My personal favourites are Yakia seafood & grill (charcoal bbq for me all the way) and Umi Kitchen where you can eat the fish you just caught at Umi Farm minutes before.
Coffee and beer are available from select stores.
Souvenirs and Gift Shops: Take Home Memories
The Japanese love souvenirs, and Hakkeijima is no exception. Explore a variety of shops offering marine-themed merchandise, unique gifts, and keepsakes. Don’t forget to pick up something special to remember your visit.
Accommodation: Stay at Hotel Sea Paradise Inn
In addition to the marine park, Hakkeijima also has a hotel called Hotel Sea Paradise Inn. It offers comfortable accommodation with ocean views and easy access to the attractions on the island.
