2026 Japan Cherry Blossom Forecast: Best Times & Places to Visit (Forecast Map)

Last Updated on March 19, 2026 by Vlad

Cherry blossom season is one of the most spectacular times to visit Japan – and in 2026, it’s already underway. The sakura front officially opened on 16th of March in Gifu, Kochi, and Kofu, followed by Nagoya on 17 March, and today – 19 March – both Hiroshima and Tokyo have recorded their first blooms. It’s earlier than average across most of Japan, and things are moving fast.

Based on the Japan Meteorological Corporation‘s 9th forecast (released today, 19th of March 2026), here’s where things stand:

Key dates for 2026 (9th Forecast):

  • Tokyo blooms 19 March ✅ (confirmed today), full bloom 26 March
  • Kyoto blooms 23 March, full bloom 31 March
  • Osaka blooms 24 March, full bloom 31 March
  • Sapporo blooms 24 April, full bloom 28 April

If you’re heading to Japan right now or in the next few weeks, this is the guide you need. Bloom dates for every major region, hidden gems worth tracking down, and everything you need to plan around the forecast.

Understanding the Japan Cherry Blossom Forecast

Cherry blossom forecasts track two key dates:

  1. Flowering Date (Kaika): When the first 5-6 blossoms appear on official observation trees
  2. Full Bloom Date (Mankai): When about 80% of the blossoms are open

The blooming season typically moves from south to north across Japan, influenced by latitude, elevation, and weather conditions. While cherry blossom predictions are remarkably accurate (usually within 3-5 days), local weather can cause variations, so flexibility in your itinerary is essential.

What’s new in 2026: The JMC is now incorporating artificial intelligence alongside traditional weather pattern analysis, providing earlier and more accurate sakura forecasts than previous years.

2026 Tokyo and Surrounding Areas Cherry Blossoms Forecast

Tokyo recorded its first blooms today, 19 March. Peak viewing is expected around 26–27 March - so if you're there this week, get out and enjoy the early flowers, and plan for peak crowds next weekend.

  • Tokyo: Flowering 19 March ✅, Full Bloom 27 March
  • Yokohama: Flowering 20 March, Full Bloom 28 March

Hidden Gem: Inokashira Park (Flowering started 18 March, Full Bloom 26 March) – Already blooming! Cherry blossoms hang over the boating lake and crowds are a fraction of Ueno. If you're in Tokyo this week, this is the one to hit first. One of the prettiest spots in the city.

2026 Central Japan (Chubu) Cherry Blossoms Forecast

Nagoya opened on 17 March - it's already blooming. The Mt Fuji area follows in early April, perfect for extending your sakura season.

  • Nagoya: Flowering 17 March ✅, Full Bloom 27 March
  • Kanazawa: Flowering 31 March, Full Bloom 6 April
  • Nagano: Flowering 3 April, Full Bloom 8 April
  • Mt Fuji Area (Lake Kawaguchi): Flowering 3 April, Full Bloom 9 April

Hidden Gem: Takato Castle Ruins Park (Nagano) – One of Japan's top cherry blossom spots with stunning mountain views, but far less crowded than the major cities.

Mt Fuji Cherry Blossoms: The Lake Kawaguchi and Lake Yamanaka area offers iconic views of sakura with Mt Fuji in the background. Blooms arrive about 2-3 weeks after Tokyo due to the higher elevation - perfect for extending the season. Best viewing spots:

  • Chureito Pagoda (Fujiyoshida): Flowering 1 April, Full Bloom 7 April
  • Kawaguchiko Shore: Flowering 3 April, Full Bloom 9 April

Kansai Region Cherry Blossoms 2026

Late March is your window for Kyoto and Osaka. Both cities are tracking to hit full bloom on 31 March - making the last few days of March the absolute sweet spot for the Kansai region.

  • Kyoto: Flowering 23 March, Full Bloom 31 March
  • Osaka: Flowering 24 March, Full Bloom 31 March
  • Nara: Flowering 24 March, Full Bloom 31 March
  • Kobe: Flowering 27 March, Full Bloom 3 April

Hidden Gem: Heian Shrine (Kyoto) (Flowering 28 March, Full Bloom 4 April) - Gets overlooked in favour of Maruyama Park, but the vermillion torii gates framing the cherry blossoms are super stunning. Go on a weekday morning if you can.

Western Japan Cherry Blossoms 2026

Hiroshima recorded its first blooms today alongside Tokyo. Fukuoka follows tomorrow. If you're in western Japan right now, sakura season has arrived.

  • Hiroshima: Flowering 19 March ✅, Full Bloom 30 March
  • Miyajima: Flowering 25 March, Full Bloom 1 April
  • Fukuoka: Flowering 20 March, Full Bloom 29 March
  • Matsuyama: Flowering 24 March, Full Bloom 2 April
  • Nagasaki: Flowering 26 March, Full Bloom 3 April

Hidden Gem: Himeji Castle (Hyogo) (Flowering 27 March, Full Bloom 3 April) - I'd argue Japan's most beautiful castle, and sakura against that white façade is absolutely next level.

2026 Northern Japan (Tohoku) Cherry Blossoms Forecast

  • Fukushima: Flowering 1 April, Full Bloom 5 April
  • Sendai: Flowering 2 April, Full Bloom 7 April
  • Yamagata: Flowering 6 April, Full Bloom 11 April
  • Aomori: Flowering 16 April, Full Bloom 21 April
  • Kakunodate (Akita): Flowering April 18, Full Bloom 23 April

Tohoku offers some of Japan's most atmospheric hanami, particularly at Hirosaki Castle in Aomori (flowering 16 April, full bloom 22 April) where the moat fills with fallen petals. If you can handle the later timing, it's spectacular and far less crowded than Tokyo or Kyoto.

2026 Hokkaido Cherry Blossoms Forecast

Japan's final blooms – and well worth the wait. Hokkaido's sakura season has a completely different feel: cooler air, fewer crowds, and a last hurrah of spring before summer arrives.

  • Hakodate: Flowering 22 April, Full Bloom 26 April
  • Sapporo: Flowering 24 April, Full Bloom 28 April

Hidden Gem: Goryokaku Park (Hakodate) – A star-shaped fort surrounded by cherry trees that looks incredible from the observation tower. Totally unique, and nothing else quite like it in Japan. Flowering 22 April, Full bloom 26th of April.

Practical Tips for Cherry Blossom Season in Japan

Book accommodation early: Cherry blossom season is one of Japan's busiest travel periods. Popular hotels in Tokyo and Kyoto fill up months in advance. If you haven't booked yet, get onto it now.

Crowds are intense: Peak weekends in Tokyo and Kyoto during full bloom are genuinely packed. We're talking shoulder-to-shoulder at popular spots. If you want photos without hundreds of strangers in them, arrive at sunrise. Seriously – 6am at popular spots gives you maybe 90 minutes of relative peace.

Weather can be unpredictable: Late March/early April in Japan can range from 8°C to 20°C. Pack layers. Light rain is common, so bring a compact umbrella or light rain jacket. If you've got kids, waterproof shoes are a lifesaver.

Hanami picnics are part of the experience: Grab some bento boxes, drinks, and a picnic blanket and settle in under the cherry trees. Convenience stores (konbini) sell everything you need, and many parks have food stalls during peak season. Just remember to take your rubbish with you. Check out my full Convenience Store Hanami Guide.
