Cherry blossom season is one of the most spectacular times to visit Japan, and 2026 is shaping up to be a cracker. Based on the Japan Meteorological Corporation‘s latest 7th forecast (released today, 5 March 2026), blooms are tracking earlier than average across most of Japan, with parts of eastern Japan sitting nearly a week ahead of normal.
Key dates for 2026 (7th Forecast):
- Tokyo blooms 19 March, full bloom 28 March
- Kyoto blooms 23 March, full bloom 1 April
- Osaka blooms 24 March, full bloom 1 April
- Sapporo blooms 25 April, full bloom 28 April
Whether you’re planning your first sakura trip or you’re a repeat offender like me, this guide covers bloom dates for every major region, hidden gems worth tracking down, and everything you need to actually plan around the forecast.
Understanding the Japan Cherry Blossom Forecast
Cherry blossom forecasts track two key dates:
- Flowering Date (Kaika): When the first 5-6 blossoms appear on official observation trees
- Full Bloom Date (Mankai): When about 80% of the blossoms are open
The blooming season typically moves from south to north across Japan, influenced by latitude, elevation, and weather conditions. While cherry blossom predictions are remarkably accurate (usually within 3-5 days), local weather can cause variations, so flexibility in your itinerary is essential.
What’s new in 2026: The JMC is now incorporating artificial intelligence alongside traditional weather pattern analysis, providing earlier and more accurate sakura forecasts than previous years.

Here's a full breakdown of expected bloom dates across Japan based on the latest 7th forecast.
Tokyo and Surrounding Areas Cherry Blossoms 2026
Tokyo is one of the earliest major cities to bloom, and this year is no exception. The last week of March is the sweet spot for peak viewing.
- Tokyo: Flowering 19 March, Full Bloom 28 March
- Yokohama: Flowering 21 March, Full Bloom 31 March
Top sakura spots in Tokyo:
| Location | First Bloom | Full Bloom |
|---|---|---|
| Yasukuni Shrine | 19 March | 28 March |
| Shinjuku Gyoen | 19 March | 31 March |
| Ueno Park | 21 March | 29 March |
| Meguro River | 22 March | 30 March |
| Chidori-ga-fuchi | 23 March | 30 March |
| Yoyogi Park | 23 March | 31 March |

Hidden Gem: Inokashira Park (Flowering 18 March, Full Bloom 26 March) – One of the earliest bloomers in Tokyo and a fraction of the crowds of Ueno. The cherry blossoms hang over a boating lake, and it's honestly one of the prettiest spots in the city. Get in early.
Central Japan (Chubu) Cherry Blossoms 2026
Nagoya leads the pack in this region, blooming almost as early as Tokyo. The Mt Fuji area comes later thanks to the elevation – perfect if you want to extend your sakura season.
- Nagoya: Flowering 17 March, Full Bloom 28 March
- Kanazawa: Flowering 1 April, Full Bloom 8 April
- Nagano: Flowering 5 April, Full Bloom 10 April
- Mt Fuji Area (Lake Kawaguchi): Flowering 6 April, Full Bloom 12 April
Hidden Gem: Takato Castle Ruins Park (Nagano) – One of Japan's top cherry blossom spots with stunning mountain views, but far less crowded than the major cities.
Mt Fuji Cherry Blossoms: The area around Lake Kawaguchi and Lake Yamanaka offers iconic views of cherry blossoms with Mt Fuji in the background. The blooms here arrive about 2-3 weeks later than Tokyo due to the higher elevation, making it perfect for extending your cherry blossom season. Best viewing spots:
- Chureito Pagoda (Fujiyoshida): Flowering 4 April, Full Bloom 10 April
- Kawaguchiko Shore: Flowering 6 April, Full Bloom 12 April
Kansai Region Cherry Blossoms 2026
Kyoto and Osaka are both tracking earlier than average, making late March to early April the prime window for the Kansai region.
- Kyoto: Flowering 23 March, Full Bloom 1 April
- Osaka: Flowering 24 March, Full Bloom 1 April
- Nara: Flowering 24 March, Full Bloom 1 April
- Kobe: Flowering 26 March, Full Bloom 4 April
Hidden Gem: Heian Shrine (Kyoto) (Flowering 28 March, Full Bloom 5 April) – Gets overlooked in favour of Maruyama Park, but the vermillion torii gates framing the cherry blossoms are genuinely stunning. Go on a weekday morning if you can.
Western Japan Cherry Blossoms 2026
These cities are ideal for early-season visitors wanting to catch the first blooms. Fukuoka in particular is a great starting point.
- Hiroshima: Flowering 20 March, Full Bloom 31 March
- Fukuoka: Flowering 19 March, Full Bloom 29 March
- Matsuyama: Flowering 23 March, Full Bloom 3 April
- Nagasaki: Flowering 26 March, Full Bloom 4 April
Hidden Gem: Himeji Castle (Hyogo) (Flowering 27 March, Full Bloom 4 April) – Arguably Japan's most beautiful castle, and sakura against that white façade is absolutely next level. It's a bit of a detour but 100% worth it.
Northern Japan (Tohoku) Cherry Blossoms 2026
- Fukushima: Flowering 2 April, Full Bloom 6 April
- Sendai: Flowering 4 April, Full Bloom 9 April
- Yamagata: Flowering 8 April, Full Bloom 13 April
- Aomori: Flowering 18 April, Full Bloom 22 April
Tohoku offers some of Japan's most atmospheric hanami, particularly at Hirosaki Castle in Aomori where the moat fills with fallen petals. If you can handle the later timing, it's spectacular and far less crowded than Tokyo or Kyoto.
Hokkaido Cherry Blossoms 2026
Japan's final blooms – and well worth the wait. Hokkaido's sakura season has a completely different feel: cooler air, fewer crowds, and a last hurrah of spring before summer arrives.
- Hakodate: Flowering 23 April, Full Bloom 26 April
- Sapporo: Flowering 25 April, Full Bloom 28 April
Hidden Gem: Goryokaku Park (Hakodate) – A star-shaped fort surrounded by cherry trees that looks incredible from the observation tower. Totally unique, and nothing else quite like it in Japan.

Practical Tips for Cherry Blossom Season in Japan
Book accommodation early: Cherry blossom season is one of Japan's busiest travel periods. Popular hotels in Tokyo and Kyoto fill up months in advance. If you haven't booked yet, get onto it now.
Crowds are intense: Peak weekends in Tokyo and Kyoto during full bloom are genuinely packed. We're talking shoulder-to-shoulder at popular spots. If you want photos without hundreds of strangers in them, arrive at sunrise. Seriously – 6am at popular spots gives you maybe 90 minutes of relative peace.
Weather can be unpredictable: Late March/early April in Japan can range from 8°C to 20°C. Pack layers. Light rain is common, so bring a compact umbrella or light rain jacket. If you've got kids, waterproof shoes are a lifesaver.
Hanami picnics are part of the experience: Grab some bento boxes, drinks, and a picnic blanket and settle in under the cherry trees. Convenience stores (konbini) sell everything you need, and many parks have food stalls during peak season. Just remember to take your rubbish with you. Check out my full Convenience Store Hanami Guide.

Final Thoughts
2026 is shaping up to be a great year for cherry blossom viewing, with blooms arriving earlier than average across most of Japan. That's good news for travellers visiting in mid-to-late March, but it does mean you need to have your plans locked in sooner rather than later.
If you're heading to Japan in late March or early April, you're in for an absolute treat. And if you arrive just before or after peak bloom, don't stress – you'll still see plenty of beautiful sakura, just with slightly fewer crowds fighting for the same spots.
