Your Guide to Sakura Magic in 2025
Yokohamaâs cherry blossoms are a stunning sight, blending Japanâs iconic sakura with the charm of a lively port city. Whether youâre after a bustling atmosphere under the petals or a peaceful spot to enjoy the view, this guide has you covered. Iâve picked the top locations for 2025 – think riverside festivities, historic gardens, and urban beauty. Hereâs where to find the best blooms!
đ For the Lively Crowd
đ Ooka River Promenade (大岥ĺˇăăă ăăźă)

Imagine 500 cherry trees stretching 3.5 km along the Ooka River, forming a pink tunnel of blossoms. During the Ookagawa Sakura Festival (late March to early April), itâs a vibrant sceneâfood stalls, live music, and lanterns lighting up the night. The river reflects the petals, making it a great spot for a festive afternoon or evening.
- Why itâs great: Boats, crowds, and energyâperfect for a social hanami experience.
- Get there: Take the train to Gumyoji Station (15 minutes from Yokohama Station).
Tip: Go on a sakura cruise if possible – itâs a unique way to see the blossoms from the water!
đď¸ Sakura-dori (Minato Mirai 21 Area) đ

Walk 500 metres from Sakuragicho Station to Landmark Tower under rows of Somei-yoshino cherry trees. The Minato Mirai 21 Sakura Festival adds excitement with LED-lit blooms and performances. Itâs a lively mix of urban buzz and natural beauty, with the skyline as a backdrop.
- Why itâs great: Modern Yokohama paired with classic sakura – ideal for a night out.
- Get there: Starts at Sakuragicho Station, easily accessible from Yokohama Station.
Tip: Take a photo with the skyscrapers at dusk!
For a Peaceful Retreat
đď¸ Sankeien Garden (ä¸ćşŞĺ)

This beautiful garden (175,000 sqm) features over 300 cherry trees around a pond, alongside historic buildings that feel like a step back in time. For 700 yen, you get a calm escapeâextended hours during sakura season let you enjoy yozakura (night blooms) in peace.
- Why itâs great: A tranquil taste of traditional Japan, away from the city noise.
- Get there: Bus from Yokohama Station (20-30 minutes).
Tip: Visit at night for illuminated blossomsâbring a warm drink for a quiet moment. Or grab some warm soup from a vending machine!
đ§ Mitsuike Park (ä¸ăćą ĺ Źĺ)

With 1,600 cherry trees across 78 varieties, this 29.7-hectare park is a hidden treasure. Blooming from mid-February to mid-April, its three ponds and forest trails offer a serene retreat. Itâs listed as one of Japanâs â100 Best Cherry Blossom Spotsâ for good reason!
- Why itâs great: Spacious, natural, and less crowdedâperfect for unwinding.
- Get there: Train to Tsurumi Station, then a short bus ride.
Tip: Visit here if you are early, or you miss the peak elsewhereâthe staggered blooms keep it lovely.
đ¸ Best of Both Worlds
đ¸ Negishi Forest Park (ć šĺ˛¸ćŁŽćĺ Źĺ)

Once a racecourse, this hilly park has 350 cherry trees and plenty of space. Near the entrance, families picnic and chat. Walk further and itâs just you and the blossoms.
- Why itâs great: Lively or relaxedâitâs up to you, with room to roam.
- Get there: Train to Negishi Station, then a short walk.
Tip: Bring a picnic for a social meal, then explore further for some quiet time.
đ Plan Your 2025 Sakura Adventure
As I wrote the other day in my Sakura Forecast for 2025 post, sakura will start blooming in Yokohama from March 27, with full bloom expected on April the 4th. If dates change, I will make an update here.
Mix it up: enjoy Ooka River or Sakura-dori for a lively night, then relax at Sankeien or Mitsuike the next morning. Negishi works well for a bit of both. All spots are easy to reach from Yokohama Station by train or bus (15-30 minutes).
Pack an umbrella, and some warm clothes – spring can bring a shower or two, with low temps too!
Start planning now for an unforgettable sakura season. You only have a few weeks left!
